Urdu Poetry- A Dominating Field of Urdu Adab

Urdu literature is largely dominated by Urdu poetry in form of ghazal and nazam. Poets with their beautiful poetry have contributed a lot towards popularity of Urdu poetry not only in sub-continent but all over the world. Urdu ghazals and nazams beautifully depict our culture and tradition. Poets have tried to interpret history, Sofiazim and love in their beautiful words. Some great poets of Urdu include Meer Darad, Ghalib, Anees, Iqbal and many other great names.



 

Urdu poetry is based on various writing styles, which include:   


Ghazal: Ghazal is written in rhythmic way with two liner couplet structure. Minimum of five couplets are required to complete a ghazal. It is considered most difficult form of poetry.


Hamd: Hamd word is taken from Quran which means praise. Hamd is such a poem in which presents praise of Allah.


Naat: Naat is basically a poem which includes praise of Prophet Muhammad (SAW)


Marsiya: Marsiya is sad poetry written on death of relatives and friends. Basically the trend of writing Marsiya started after death of Hazrat Imam Hussain.


Masnavi: Masnavi basically represents poetic romance. It is written in heroic couplets representing   emotion of love, which may be for other human or God.


Nazam: Nazam is considered as the major part of Urdu poetry. Nazams cover almost every aspect of life including common life, national issues, culture, tradition and thinking of a common man.


Some other forms of poetry include Qasida, Qawwali, Rubai, Tazkira and Shayari. Urdu poets have given words to their thinking in these styles of Urdu poetry.

Some prominent poets Urdu poetry include Allama Iqbal, Meer Taki Meer, Ghalib, Ahmed Fraz, Amjad Islam Amjad and many other such great names. These poets are famous for their classic poetry around the globe. Their contribution towards the development of Urdu Poetry and Urdu Adab is really admirable.
